Kharkov sights and places of interest
Sumskaya is the central street of Kharkov with many shops and restaurants in it. It connects two main squares, starting at Constitution Square with City Executive council and a number of pre revolution buildings. At "Istoricheskiy Muzei" subway station, there is a thermometer on the building, the main meeting place. Walking up Sumskaya Street you will see Shevchenko Drama Theatre with cosy Poesiya Park opposite to it. Further up there is Opera and Ballet theatre and Mirror Stream across the road. The best Kharkov monuments to Taras Shevchenko can be also found in this street. It is located in a peaceful park with nice lanes leading to the Zoo and Cascad, another architectural place of interest.
But the main square of the city is Svobody Square. It is much larger than the Red Square in Moscow and the third largest in the world. All events and concerts occur here.
There are two Botanical gradens in Kharkov. A smaller one is located in Shevchenko park, shelter from fuss and noise. The other one with cleanest spring of the city is situated near Botanical garden subway station. Once you are there, you will find plants you have never seen before.
Old cathedrals are worth of attention as well. Pokrovskiy cathedral built in 1689 is an architectural masterpiece of those times. Uspenskiy cathedral built in honour of victory of Russian Army over Napoleon in the middle of the former century, remaines to be the highest building of the city. Annunciation and Catholic churces are unique in their beauty.
Memorial is a majestic complex of fame which immortalized feat of arms in the war against fascism.
